Aquarius has a service in Birmingham especially for the over 50’s and called Time Of My Life. It is a city-wide service that offers specially tailored one to one sessions with a peripatetic practitioner, home visits and community based interventions, referral for detox and wider support, brief interventions with a support worker, (hospital based 2 days per week), reduction and maintenance advice as well as debt, benefit and housing support.
Time of My Life provides activity groups including ICT skills, arts and craft, gardening and knitting. The aim is to minimise social isolation and create a sense of purpose and community for the many isolated and vulnerable over 50’s. We work closely with partners to achieve a holistic service, reduce hospital admissions and promote safer drinking.
Alongside this our training coordinator will share a tailored package of older persons’ focussed alcohol training to partner organisations to highlight the need for these issues to be in the forefront of professionals awareness, challenging apathy and mindsets towards the older drinking population. We will train ‘future professionals’ and offer short, work-based placements to social work and nursing students to embed this learning into the workers of the future.
Our volunteer/peer mentor coordinator will recruit and train a variety of individuals to help support the service and to allow them to capitalise on their existing skills. This will range from ‘community helpers’ providing tea, coffee and welcome duties to skilled volunteers sharing their knowledge and taking the lead at group activities.
