This week it is Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week. Raising awareness about the impact alcohol misuse has on people’s families, especially young people is something we care passionately about at Aquarius. Like many others we first hand account of the long term impact that having an alcoholic parent has on their children’s lives.
At Aquarius we have multiple young people’s services that support young people affected by a parent or carer’s substance misuse. We believe in the importance of tailored support, not just for those using substances, but also the people around them. We offer 1:1 support, group activity sessions and opportunities to get involved with volunteering and physical activities – all in a supportive and encouraging environment that will help to boost young people’s confidence and self-esteem.
We offer services across the midlands, in Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Wolverhampton, Telford, and Northamptonshire, as well as Birmingham, which is the base for our Evolve Café, a social enterprise which provides young people who have faced barriers into employment with training and job opportunities.
Aquarius CARES is an invaluable part of our young people services as well, which helps to develop resilience and coping strategies whilst also demonstrating how to build positive relationships. This programme aims to empower young people to improve communication and feel better supported as an individual.
At Aquarius we want to reduce the stigma surrounding having a family member with substance issues. Only then will people be able to access the support they need.
