If you take drugs so will your unborn baby
The drugs you take will pass through the placenta to the baby so whatever you take your baby takes too. Taking drugs at any stage of your pregnancy can lead to adverse effects on the baby; taking certain drugs can starve the baby of essential oxygen meaning their development is affected.
It is important to seek help as soon as possible as treatment can help you to manage your addiction more safely through pregnancy and reduce the risks to your unborn baby. If treatment is not accessed your baby can be born with a dependency and will have to go through withdrawal.
What kind of things can happen
- The baby won’t develop properly
- The placenta can become detached causing internal bleeding
- Your baby can withdraw if you suddenly stop taking drugs
- You may go into premature labour
