Le Tour de Recovery

For those in recovery, every single day is a day to feel proud – proud of the fact they have overcome addiction and now lead much healthier and happier lives. Addiction comes in many forms: alcohol, drugs or gambling being the most common, all of which have a seriously debilitating effect on people’s lives.

With many charities across the UK helping people move from the dark world of addiction forward into recovery it really is something that many people can stand up and feel proud of. Indeed this recovery pride is celebrated in the form of the Annual Recovery Walk which is commemorating its 7th year in September.

For many celebrating recovery is something that is done more regularly in the form of recovery groups, often run by the same charities which help overcome addiction. These groups welcome anyone who is in this new phase of their lives, they meet up and engage in activities such as arts and crafts, educational workshops, fun activities and training.

This year the Coventry Recovery Community want to celebrate their success and raise awareness of the fantastic work they do and show just how important a recovery community is, so prior to the Annual Recovery Walk taking place in September, 10 people who are in recovery are participating in a sponsored bike ride – Le Tour de Recovery – covering a staggering 300 miles.

Le Tour De Recovery will depart from The Recovery Partnership, Leamington Spa, at 8.00 am on 7th September 2015 and arrive in Durham Town 5 days later on Saturday 12th September; the day of the 7th Annual Recovery Walk.

The route, devised by Steve Bliss (Needle Exchange Co-ordinator The Recovery Partnership) with support from Simon Morgan (service user involvement and advocacy worker at Aquarius) heads north, via Leicester, Burton-on-Trent, Chesterfield,  calling at substance misuse services and recovery communities along the way. The ride aims to raise awareness of the importance of visible recovery communities in sustaining active recovery and the necessity of keeping harm reduction at the heart of the recovery agenda.

A number of charities and organisations have sponsored le Tour de Recovery but the 10 strong crew are now hoping to raise as much money as possible to put back into the recovery community to support more and more people in as many ways as possible as they overcome their addiction.
