Steps to Change

Steps to Change

Improving health and wellbeing through activity for over-55s affected by alcohol, drugs or gambling.

Our 12 week Steps to Change programme provides an alternative to substance use or gambling, helps to prevent isolation, and improves your mental and physical health. Our activities are open to everyone no matter your level of physical fitness or capability – and if you have specific needs or disabilities, our trained volunteers can work with you to make sure you can take part.

Taking part involves half an hour of exercise per week in community venues, parks, and some of our offices around the West Midlands. Activities include:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Walking football
  • Table tennis
  • Bowling
  • Armchair sports

We are proud to be funded by Sport England through their Active Ageing fund.

We have Steps to Change groups running in Birmingham, Solihull, Telford and Wrekin, and Wolverhampton. You can sign up yourself by emailing stepstochange@aquarius.org.uk or by calling 0121 622 8181 and asking to speak to the Steps to Change team. We also accept referrals from other services and agencies – if you’re referring someone else, please make sure you have their consent to get in touch.

Before you start the programme, we complete a risk assessment and health assessment to make sure to project is appropriate for you. We also give you a questionnaire before and after the 12 week sessions to evaluate any changes and benefits to your life.

We’re always looking for volunteers to run our activities, evaluate progress, and promote Steps to Change in communities. Contact us by emailing stepstochange@aquarius.org.uk with the subject line ‘Volunteering’.
